Former Get Fit With Ida MenteesYour mentoring was super helpful! You gave me bigger and bigger opportunities to lead the class and eased me into the role of the instructor without giving me too much to handle. You also took the lead first in order to show me but didnt ask me to copy your actions.
Your mentoring consisted of having me perform a warmup step routine for one of your classes and then giving me feedback about it to help me improve. You also invited me to other classes such as bootcamps and spinning to let me see all the different varieties of exercise. Lastly you challenged me to visit conferences and take classes that i may not have felt confident about. I am currently working in the fitness industry teaching up to 15 classes each week and working with a wide array of individuals and populations of adults. I teach weight lifting, kickboxing, stretch classes, bootcamp, core classes, and occasionally teach step. I would certainly recommend anyone to be mentored by you as you have a great way of showing someone how to do things but not stifling their creativity. You help your students learn to do things on their own amd inspire them to be the leaders that they must be in class. Spencer Hoyt 1. Your mentoring was extremely helpful! What was most helpful was attending your classes first, reading the book, reflecting with you on what the books means 😂 then seeing how you used it in your class.
2. I feel like your mentoring consisted of discussions and actions. We talked a lot about why things were done in a certain order (warm up, ease into workout, full on, cool down, stretch, etc.) and what the consequences were. We practiced the right form for moves, using weights, and stretching. Cueing was important and once we practiced what a class looked like, how to cue and when (not saying 1 to give the people enough time to make a smooth transition).
3. I am currently not working in the fitness industry, though I wasn't looking to replace teaching with fitness anyways. I feel like my case is different as I do want to teach a class or two a week, though moving (to different countries each year) takes more time to adjust than I expected.. This will be my third year in Korea and I've talked about teaching a fitness class to the students after school. I am currently just doing some 30 minute workouts with teachers (following a video). Next year I should have more time in my schedule that I can devote to fitness. (Currently I am teaching a new grade level, learning Korean, and doing my Master's.. It's a lot this year!)
4. I would absolutely recommend you, Ida!! You have a great personality and I learned a lot from you! I would recommend it to someone who is looking to work full time in the fitness industry.
Janice S. Ida Messerman mentored me during my time preparing for my exam to be certified for teaching group fitness. This was extremely help as she taught me basics on keeping exercise safe and fun. She taught me how to properly warm up, strengthen, cool down and stretch each muscle group. She taught me certain exercise that focuses on certain muscle groups while always keeping them safe. Also would show me each exercise and how to modify and intensify those exercise depending on the person your working with. I currently teach for her and I also am a substitute at the Bath Family YMCA. I would recommend this to anyone new or even someone who is already certified because her years of experience she has a lot to offer. I couldn’t have done it with out her. Thanks Ida!!!
